JOIN US AT THE CAROLINE CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER FOR THE REVEAL OF OUR FIRST EVER EASTERN SCREECH OWL NESTING BOX COLLECTION!
The Advanced Manufacturing Professionals (AMP) program is a high-level, high school program developed by the Untangled Minds Foundation in partnership with Caroline County Public Schools that focuses on the personal and professional development of our youth through advanced manufacturing practices.
One of the components of the AMP program is community involvement and outreach. Students are required to visit and talk with community members within a particular industry to learn about their needs and how we can design our projects to become a solution to that need.
This semester, students partnered with the Caroline County Bird Club and Adkins Arboretum to learn more about the needs of birds from this region. After learning about several birds, students uncovered their is a shortage of nesting boxes for the Eastern Screech Owls.
As a team, students voted to design and produce 14 nesting boxes specifically designed for the Eastern Screech Owl. Will, the AMP student designer, envisioned a more unique nesting box that is safe and habitable for the owls but also pleasing to the eye. Aside from the laser engraved owl and decorative cut outs on the side of the nesting boxes, students also discovered a milk-based, non-toxic paint to add a slight pop of color!
All materials used to construct the boxes are non-toxic for the species and designed with a small latch for an easy clean.
At $60 a nesting box, it is our hope these nesting boxes help grow the Eastern Screech Owl population. 100% of the proceeds go back into the AMP program for further student learning.
